    Much-loved poem turns 100

Published on 25/06/2014 by David Birkett

On 23rd June 1914, poet Edward Thomas was on a train that called at Adelstrop station in Gloucestershire. This event inspired Thomas’ poem of the same name, which has become internationally-known and is thought of by many as the quintessential poetic celebration of the British countryside. The ending of the poem:

And for that minute a blackbird sang
Close by, and round him, mistier,
Farther and farther, all the birds
    Of Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire

inspired The Poetry Society to run a Twitter campaign (#BlackbirdSang) on 23 June 2014 inviting people to Tweet what they could hear at 12:45 pm. A trawl through Twitter using the hashtag will provide interesting reading.
