    Monsters in the Library

Published on 03/10/2014 by David Birkett

Terror and Wonder have arrived at the British Library.  To celebrate 250 years having passed since the publication of Horace Walpole’s The Castle of Otranto (which introduced many of the themes and stage props that would become staples of Gothic literature) the UK’s largest-ever exhibition on this theme opened on October 3rd.  Visitors will be able to see fascinating visual as well as textual material, such as the earliest illustrations depicting those prototypes of fear, Dracula and Frankenstein.  The exhibition will follow the thread of horror and gothic drama into the contemporary era, showcasing the work of writers such as Mervyn Peake and Angela Carter, and will also demonstrate how wider culture and society have been embraced by the sinister shadow of gothic writing.  Terror and Wonder: The Gothic Imagination crawls down the walls of The British Library until January 20th 2015.
